Case Definition
Confirmed Case
  • Laboratory confirmation of infection with/without symptoms: 
    • Culture isolation of Shigella spp. from an appropriate clinical specimen.
Probable Case
  • Laboratory evidence of infection with or without symptoms: 
    • Detection of Shigella spp. by PCR from an appropriate clinical specimen.
Suspect Case
  • Clinical illness in a person who is epidemiologically linked to a confirmed case.
Definition of clinical illness
  • Clinical illness is characterized by diarrhea, fever, nausea, cramps, and tenesmus. Asymptomatic infections may occur.
Appropriate clinical specimens: 

  • Appropriate clinical specimens include sterile site, deep tissue wounds, stool, vomit, urine, or blood.
