Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fevers

Case definition

Confirmed case

  • For typhoid fever, laboratory confirmation of infection with/without symptoms: 

    •  Culture isolation of Salmonella Typhi from an appropriate clinical specimen. 

  • For paratyphoid fever, laboratory confirmation of infection with/without symptoms:

    •  Culture isolation of Salmonella Paratyphi from an appropriate clinical specimen

Appropriate clinical specimens

  • Appropriate clinical specimens include sterile site, deep tissue wounds, stool, vomit, urine, or blood.
