Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fevers

Case definition

Confirmed case

For typhoid fever, laboratory confirmation of infection with or without symptoms:

  • isolation of Salmonella Typhi from an appropriate clinical specimen.

For paratyphoid fever, laboratory confirmation of infection with or without symptoms:

  • isolation of Salmonella Paratyphi  A, B or C from an appropriate clinical specimen.
