Dr. Mayank Singal is a public health and preventive medicine specialist. He is the medical lead for enteric, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases at BCCDC. He is also a clinical instructor in the UBC School of Population & Public Health.
Dr. Singal's research interests are focused on understanding the epidemiology and transmission of communicable diseases with an aim to developing evidence-informed interventions intended to control communicable diseases.
As the medical lead for enteric, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, Dr. Singal leads a multidisciplinary team to assess public health risks, design surveillance systems and develop evidence-informed provincial guidelines for control and prevention of communicable diseases. His most recent work includes the areas of rabies, COVID-19, Monkeypox and numerous enteric outbreaks.
Dr. Singal's focus on communicable disease is backed by a strong foundation in front-line and full-service public health practice for five years at Alberta Health Services, where he provided clinical consultations to referring physicians, played an important role in provincial vaccine policy development, and contributed to the public health response to emergencies such as the Fort McMurray wildfires of 2016. His contribution to the wildfire response earned him a Premier's Award for Outstanding Service.
Dr. Singal completed his undergraduate medical education at McMaster University and residency training at the University of Alberta. He strives for an experiential approach to learning and discovery by integrating clinical medicine with public health practice.
