Mark Gilbert

Mark Gilbert is a public health physician of the Clinical Prevention Services at BCCDC and an associate professor at the UBC School of Population & Public Health. He holds an Applied Public Health Chair related to improving STBBI testing systems.

Research

Dr. Gilbert's research interests include:

  • Improving the equity, appropriateness and sustainability of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) testing systems
  • Developing, implementing, evaluating, and scaling-up up innovative sexual health programs, with a focus on testing and digital programs
  • Gender and sexual minority sexual health, and
  • Using integrated data sources to better understand the epidemiology of STBBI.

Bio

Dr. Gilbert is a settler of European descent and a public health physician grateful to be living and working on the lands of the Coast Salish peoples. Over his career Mark has worked as a field epidemiologist and medical health officer, and as a physician epidemiologist leading provincial STBBI surveillance systems in BC and Ontario. At the BCCDC, Mark leads and supports clinical prevention programs and research for marginalized populations facing health inequities and disproportionately affected by conditions including STBBI.

Mark is the medical lead for the Online Sexual Health Services program at BCCDC and conducts research to support the development of internet-based approaches to sexual health service delivery, including BC's sexual health education website SmartSexResource and internet-based STBBI testing program GetCheckedOnline.  Mark also leads the Digital Sexual Health Initiative, a team of researchers, program leaders and policy-makers that have been working together since 2009 examining the individual, system and population impact of digital sexual health interventions.

Mark is also an affiliated researcher with the Community Based Research Centre and the Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity
