James Zlosnik is the senior scientist for bioinformatics at the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC.

Research

Dr. Zlosnik's research area at BCCDC includes the development and implementation of bioinformatic tools and processes for the analysis of whole genome sequence data from a range of human pathogens.

His previous studies focused on translational microbiology of difficult-to-identify and drug-resistant pathogens in people with cystic fibrosis, on which he has published a wide-range of studies from molecular to epidemiological analyses.

Bio

Dr. Zlosnik holds a PhD in molecular microbiology from Imperial College London. He completed his BSc in microbiology at Cardiff University. Dr. Zlosnik undertook post-doctoral training with Dr. David Speert at the BC Children's Hospital in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He continued as a research associate in the Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Paediatrics at UBC between 2010 and 2021, where he also managed a laboratory that functioned as the Canadian resource for the identification of Burkholderia spp. bacteria infecting people with cystic fibrosis. Between 2016 and 2021, he was also part of the Division of Respirology and the Vaccine Evaluation Centre at BC Children's Hospital.

In 2021, Dr. Zlosnik joined BCCDC, first as a scientist working on analysis and reporting of whole genome data of SARS-Co-V2, and then as the senior scientist for bioinformatics at the Public Health Laboratory. Dr. Zlosnik also holds a clinical faculty position as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC.
