Data Notes
We acknowledge the Title and Rights of BC First Nations who have cared for and nurtured the lands, air and waters for all time, including the
xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam),
Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and
səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) on whose unceded, occupied, and ancestral territory BCCDC is located. As a provincial organization, we also recognize and acknowledge the inherent Title and Rights of BC First Nations whose territories stretch to every inch of the lands colonially known as “British Columbia.”
BC is also home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people from homelands elsewhere in Canada. We recognize the distinct rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people and BCCDC is beginning its work to uphold a
distinctions-based approach to Indigenous data sovereignty and self-determination. All Indigenous Peoples who live in BC have rights to self-determination, health and wellness, and respectful use of their data in alignment with Indigenous data governance principles, including but not limited to
OCAP®.
BCCDC is working to address the consequences of colonial policies which have had lasting effects on all Indigenous Peoples living in the province. Consistent with the
Coast Salish teaching of
thee eat (truth) gifted to PHSA by Coast Salish Knowledge Keeper Sulksun, we recognize that ongoing settler colonialism in BC undermines the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples who live in BC and significantly contributes to health inequities and data gaps.
The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) excludes persons living on reserves and is therefore not reflective of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people and communities. For public health surveillance indicators pertaining to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in BC, please see:
- For 2019/20, Adult Body Mass Index (BMI) estimates are populated at the Health Service Delivery Area, BC, and Canada levels only. Health Authority level estimates could not be calculated due to changes in the data source.
- Fruit & Vegetable Consumption and Physical Activity estimates are not available for BC or Canada for the 2019/20 period.

Methodology: For a detailed description of the methodology, please see the
Statistics Canada webpage. Please note that the CCHS methodology significantly changed with the 2015 cycle.
Comparing data between previous cycles and the 2015 cycle onwards should be done with caution. For this reason, trend graphs in the dashboard are presented separately for the time periods before and after the methodology change.
Data Quality and Suppression: Statistics Canada uses the coefficient of variation (CV) to establish the reliability of the estimates provided from CCHS data. The CV is produced using bootstrap techniques. Data with a CV of greater than 35.0% or that did not meet the minimum sample size requirement are suppressed due to extreme sampling variability. Likewise, values whose CV is between 15.1% and 35.0% are marginal estimates and are labelled as to be interpreted with caution.
Measures: BC Health Authority level estimates were available in the CCHS two-year period estimate files until 2015/16. Since 2017/18, Health Authority level estimates have been calculated by the BCCDC using the PUMF and analysis using bootstrap weights as described/recommended in the CCHS PUMF User Guides.
The dashboard includes measures reported in the core component of the survey and does not include measures reported in optional components selected for BC during any given survey cycle.
Time period covered: The dashboard includes data from surveys performed between 2007/08 and 2019/20. Indicator availability varies across years. Therefore, some indicators are not available for the full time period shown in the dashboard.
Updates: The dashboard is updated every two years in accordance with Statistics Canada’s release of the CCHS two-year period estimates and PUMF.
