Rapid Antigen Testing

Rapid antigen tests detect the antigens (proteins) of the virus that causes COVID-19. It can take 3 to 7 days after infection for there to be enough antigens to be detected by the test. 

Public health recommends using rapid antigen tests for people with COVID-19 symptoms only.

Expiry dates for Artron tests extended

Health Canada has extended the shelf life of Artron’s COVID-19 Antigen Test. If you have an Artron COVID-19 Antigen Test from a local retail pharmacy, please add 6 months to the expiration date shown on the package and the test can still be used as directed.  This extended shelf-life applies to all lot numbers of Artron rapid tests.

Health Canada has extended the shelf life of the Abbott Panbio Nasal COVID-19 Rapid Test Device to 24 months from the date of manufacture.  If you have these tests in your home or workplace, add 24 months or two years to manufacture date on the package to confirm the revised expiry date and use as directed.  Health Canada’s extended approval took place after the packages were printed and the tests were distributed.
