Course Details

The STI Certified Practice Online Course is divided into three main components:

  1. Learning Online – an introduction to the online learning management system to help participants gain familiarity and comfort.

  2. The STI Certified Practice Online Course – the STI content is divided into six modules including:
    • Introduction to STI Nursing Practice
    • Human Sexuality
    • Comprehensive Assessment
    • Intervention, Treatment and Education
    • Referral and Additional Resources
    • Partner Notification, Documentation, Reporting & Surveillance

Each module will be open between one and three weeks depending on work load in the module.  We estimate 4 - 6 hours/week for nurses to complete a module. There will be 2 assignments during the course and a final exam.

To comply with CRNBC requirements the final exam is to be invigilated, time limited and password protected. We will be asking you to identify a proctor who will receive the password for you to write the exam.

The online final exam will be held on the final course date from 9:00 am – 11:00 am.

  3. STI Clinical Practicum

The 3 day clinical practicum will be scheduled to take place once you have completed the online portion of the course. You will receive an email when you are approximately mid-way through the course with instructions for booking your clinical experience.

Over the course of 3 days, nurses who are new STI practice are guided through an introduction to the world of STI nursing at the STI Clinic in Vancouver. The clinic has a 20 year history as an educational / training facility. Along with instruction, clinical practical experience for new STI nurses has always been provided by the STI Clinic nursing team. This unique practical experience is an essential component for successful completion of the STI Certified Practice Online course, allowing integration of theory into practice.

The Education program at the BCCDC, in collaboration with various community partners, is in the process of supporting learners in attaining their clinical experience in their own workplace, or within the Health Authority in which they practice.
