Bioterrorism

Bioterrorism is the deliberate terrorist release of a virus, bacteria, or germ with the intention of causing death or illness. These agents are found in nature, but can be modified to:

  • Amplify the symptoms of a disease
  • Improve resistance to medicine
  • Increase transmission

Biological agents can be  released through the air, water, or food. Some bioterrorism agents, such as smallpox, can be spread from person to person, while others such as anthrax, cannot.
