In BC, the protection of water quality is the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment and, for waters crossing provincial or national boundaries, Environment Canada. The Regional Health Authorities (RHA) regulate municipalities and other agencies which provide drinking water. Information on testing individual water sources is available through the RHAs.
BCCDC Public Health Laboratory performs specialized reference and investigative water analysis around microbiological threats. Drinking water testing is conducted by the lab for a number of water systems and participates in the Enhanced Water Quality Assurance Program. The Environmental Health Services at BCCDC supports the RHAs and the Ministries of Environment and Health in investigating and controlling water-based threats to health.
