Streptococcal Disease, Invasive, Group A

Streptococcal bacteria Group A streptococcal disease (GAS) is caused by a bacteria called Group A streptococcus.

Most often, Group A streptococcal infections are mild illnesses such as “strep throat” or impetigo.

Sometimes, the bacteria invade the lungs, blood, or spread along the layers of tissue that surround muscle. These infections are called invasive Group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease and are very serious, even life-threatening.

Epidemiology

  • In 2007, there were 244 cases of iGAS in BC
  • Five per cent of cases were associated with toxic shock syndrome
  • Seven per cent of cases were associated with necrotizing fasciitis
  • Since 1998, BC has had an enhanced surveillance program for iGAS which has increased the reporting of less severe iGAS cases
