Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive organs.  It usually starts with a bacterial infection and inflammation of the cervix that is generally caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia. PID is treated with 2 or more types of antibiotics to make sure that all the bacteria are killed. If untreated, PID can cause scar tissue in the pelvic organs and can lead to infertility.
