Case Definitions of Cryptococcus gattii Infection

Both confirmed and probable cases are reportable.

Confirmed Case

  • BC resident AND
  • Culture-confirmed C. gattii infection.

Probable Case

  • BC resident AND
  • HIV negative AND
  • Lives in or visited a local or internaional endemic area in the year prior to onset/diagnosis AND
  • Laboratory evidence of infection:

- Positive latex agglutination test (> 1:8) AND symptoms compatible* with C. gattii infection OR
- Positive histopathology OR
- Positive microscopy OR
- Culture-confirmed Cryptococcus without information on species.

* Compatible signs and symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, headache, neck stiffness, confusion, skin ulcer or subcutaneous mass.
