Cholera

Cholera bacteria Cholera is one of the oldest known causes of epidemics. It has caused 7 recorded pandemics since 1816 (pandemics are epidemics affecting a large number of people, in more than one country) .  Rare in developed countries, it still occurs frequently in countries with poor sanitation and crowded living conditions.

The main reservoir (source) of contamination is humans. Food and drinking water can become contaminated, and cause outbreaks. Travelers are advised to follow the precautions as outlined in the 'Prevention' section of the Overview.
